I Have a Skincare Product Idea — Where Do I Start With Development?

Short answer: You start by turning your idea into three decisions: what claim or benefit you want the product to deliver, who it is for, and whether you already have an active ingredient or formulation in mind. From there, development typically follows three stages — discover the right ingredients, test them for safety and efficacy, and create the finished formulation. You do not need a formulation, a lab, or even a finished concept to start this conversation.

The three stages of turning an idea into a product

Discover. If you have not yet chosen an active ingredient, this stage identifies candidates using AI-guided screening of ingredient and molecular data, matched against the biological effect you want (brightening, barrier repair, anti-ageing, and so on).

Test. Whatever ingredient or early formulation you bring, it is validated in laboratory assays before you commit to a full product — this is what protects you from launching on a claim you cannot support later.

Create. The validated ingredient is built into a stable, compatible formulation, ready for manufacture.

How Hexis Lab approaches this

Hexis Lab combines an AI-guided discovery platform (HexisPro.X) with in-vitro laboratory validation and formulation development, so an idea can move through discovery, testing and formulation with the same team and the same evidence base throughout — rather than being handed between separate suppliers at each stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a formulation before I approach Hexis Lab?

No. Many indie brands start with only a product concept or target claim. See our page on developing a product without an existing formulation.

Can I start with just a target market or skin type in mind?

Yes — a defined audience (for example, a skin type, age group or concern) is often a stronger starting point than a specific ingredient, since it lets discovery work backwards from the biological effect you need.

Talk through your product idea

Every project starts with a conversation about what you want the product to do. There is no charge for an initial scoping discussion.
